Your Identity and Value

Sadly, we’ve known many single people, especially ones who have been searching for a soul mate for a long time, who feel badly about themselves. Maybe they hate the way they look. Maybe they think they are no fun, don’t make enough money, or don’t have any personality. Since they haven’t found God’s best in the form of a mate yet, they have begun to assume that something is wrong with them. And they fear that they are thereby disqualified from ever having a soul mate.

Is this kind of feeling legitimate?

Well, of course there are always ways that any of us can improve ourselves. But let us say this to you: if you are a Christian, your identity is absolutely secure and undeniably valuable. Again, it goes back to what the Bible says.

Let’s see what Scripture says about you.

First of all, you were made in the image of God. You’re not living in this world by chance, the product of impersonal processes. You reflect the very nature of God.

God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)

Second, your body was specially crafted by God and is beautiful. There is no one else like you. Think of all that your mind and body can do! You’re a miracle made by God.

You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalm 139:13-14)

Third, God has a plan for you and is carrying it out. Like Jeremiah (see Jeremiah 1:5), you have had a role prepared for you even before you were born.

All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. (Psalm 139:16)

We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

Never believe the lie that you are a mistake or you are not good enough. You are made in God’s image, redeemed by Christ’s blood, and held secure in His hand for all eternity. You are exactly the person God designed you to be. And more than that, you are the person God loves.
